The Kappa Foundation in conjunction with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti-Inkster Alumni Chapter sponsored its first Jazz & Jeans Concert on September 6, 2019 at The Village Theater in Canton, Michigan. Contemporary jazz artist Althea Rene played funk and R&B for the main event. Pianist Demetrius Nabors performed for the opening act. Channel 4 News Anchor Evrod Cassidy served as the Master of Ceremony. 389 people attended this event.
An additional 125 people attended an After Glow at Spoons Place Restaurant and Bar in Canton following the concert. The Caterer treated our VIP guests like royalty with their outstanding service.
The concert was a huge success and the entertainers along with our MC requested to come back next year for a repeat performance. Likewise, the AAYI Kappas planned for Jazz & Jeans to become an annual event. Unfortunately, Michigan residents spent 2020 sheltered in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you have found this page, there's great news! Jazz & Jeans returns in 2026! You can purchase tickets here.

The Committee that coordinated the first Jazz & Jeans event in 2019 was led by Michael Kinloch and Tony Eccleston. Other Brothers who played a major role in planning and executing this Jazz and Jeans Concert were Darrell Washington, Isaac Lockhart., Eric Brannon, Brian Cullens, Mark Farr, Art Hicks, Isadore King, Tim Lipkin, John Newman, Cedric Scott, Chris Starks, Ted Sturdivant and Sherman Taylor.
